In response to your last question. Can we not have the joy of freedom AND stop the sinning? Having joy for the freedom of sin is the easy part. Knowing that what Jesus experienced on the cross was not just the physical pain but the weight, shame and emotional pain that comes with the sin of all humanity, over all time, stopping the sinning seems pretty important. Because I love him so much, I don't want to add to what he felt there
Don't know if that was the answer you were going for.
Courtney - please don't misunderstand, followers of Christ should display the character of Christ. My question is why we focus so much on the externals of sinning, a condition brought on by spiritual death, when Christ's sacrifice on the cross has accomplished for us freedom and life. If we walk in the newness of life that is ours then we will not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Cessation of sin should be a byproduct of true belief, not simply the result of some type of spiritual flagellation for religious show. Thanks for the comment!
